Gold seekers crossed the prairie and flooded into Colorado by the tens of thousands after Gold was discovered in "Pikes Peak Country" in 1858. While most returned home empty-handed, Five men, William & George Hazzard, Andrew Hagus, Thomas Donelson and James Blundell soon found out that crops provided a better income and staked claims along the Platte River near present-day Brighton Colorado.
The first plat for the town of Brighton was filed in 1881 by Daniel F. Carmichael. The name "Brighton" is credited to his wife Alice after her birthplace "Brighton Beach, New York" and was later incorporated in 1887.
